Glass Slipper has been officially found fit. Netflix has today confirmed that Academy Award-nominated actress Amanda Seyfried has joined the voice cast of Netflix’s upcoming animated feature. stepStepping into the iconic role of Cinderella.

As we covered last time in December, step Netflix is ​​reimagining the classic fairy tale. The animated comedy focuses on the characters that history has hated – the “evil” stepsisters – proving that they’re not villains, just misunderstood ones.
With Ali Wong (Beef, Always Be My Maybe) already on board as the misunderstood Lilith and Stephanie Sue (everything everywhere at once) voicing her casually ambivalent sister Margot, in addition to Amanda Seyfried (home maid, drop outof netflix Munchof netflix heard and seen things, Mamma Mia!) as Cinderella has assembled a powerhouse central trio for the film, which is set to arrive on Netflix later this year.

Directed by Alice Tzu and John Ripa (co-directors of Disney Raya and the Last Dragon), step Promises to be a refreshing and much-needed twist to the story we all know. According to the directors, Seyfried was the perfect choice to bring this modern princess to life.

“Amanda has an incredible ability to make her characters distinct and relatable, and that’s exactly what we needed when taking on such a great character like Cinderella,” director Alice Tzu shared in a statement today. “We wanted to create a modern heroine full of flaws and ways to cope, and Amanda immediately rose to the task. Her portrayal of Cinderella is hilarious and heartbreaking and, most importantly, refreshingly human. You won’t want to miss it.”

Co-director John Ripa echoed that praise, saying, “Amanda has been a joy to work with. She brings a level of experience and passion that inspires us to delve even deeper into the character. Her process of eliciting emotions, her control of her voice – it all comes together to give the classic character of Cinderella a depth and humor that we never could have imagined.”

“Do you think you know Cinderella’s “wicked” stepsisters? Think again! When misunderstood Lilith (Ali Wong) is accused of hijacking the Royal Ball with a stolen magic wand, she accidentally turns her sister Margot (Stephanie Soo) into a frog and leaves the kingdom in the hands of a prince-obsessed mean girl. Now Lilith has to deal with Cinderella. (Amanda Seyfried)… and a surprisingly dreamy troll… to save the kingdom, repair the fractured fairy tale, and prove that even the so-called villains deserve happily ever after.”

First announced in 2020, the film is produced by Amy Poehler, Jane Hartwell, and Kim Lessing, with Poehler and Lessing producing under Poehler’s Paper Kite Productions banner.

On the animation side, the feature is being brought to life by Netflix Animation Studios (NAS) in Sydney and NAS Vancouver. In addition to the casting update, NAS Vancouver today unveiled its brand new campus as production on the film ramps up ahead of its 2026 release.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on Steps as it gets set to release later this year (we’re thinking sometime between August and October), amid a very quiet animation slate for the streamer for the year. Ahead stepNetflix has cloudy (1 May) and Ray Gunn (late 2026), but most of their other big changes are coming in the next few years.
