Untold UK: Jamie Vardy

Untold UK begins with the story of Jamie Vardy, who went from lower league footballer to iconic Premier League champion in just a few years. Born in Sheffield, Vardy was a top footballer in the English lower leagues, proving to be a standout goalscorer for Stocksbridge, Halifax Town and Fleetwood Town. At the age of 24, he finally received a big move to Championship team Leicester City for €1.3M, a record fee for a player outside the Football League.

Vardy became an instant fan favorite at Leicester, known for his fast pace and neat finishing. He led Leicester to Premier League promotion. But then, in 2015, he was part of the starting line-up under Claudio Ranieri that won the Premier League. It was an unprecedented feat, with odds of 5,000–1.

Jamie Vardy became a major media personality with his wife Rebekah Vardy. His wife Rebekah would spark major controversy as a result of the ‘Wagatha Christie’ scandal.

The series features those closest to the action, including Rebekah Vardy, Nigel Pearson (Leicester manager), Wes Morgan (Leicester teammate), Mark Albrighton (Leicester teammate), Andy King (Leicester teammate), John Morris (Jamie Vardy’s agent), Brett Lovell (Stocksbridge teammate), Dave Rennie (Leicester head physio) and Rob Tanner (Leicester football Journalists) are included.

Untold UK: Liverpool’s Istanbul miracle

This story is by far the most documented of the three. It describes Liverpool’s emphatic comeback against AC Milan in the 2005 Champions League Final in Istanbul. At half-time the Reds were 3-0 down and falling behind. However, something changed when they came on in the second half under captain Steven Gerrard. They immediately pulled a goal back and suddenly had a comeback. They eventually took Milan the distance and won the final on a penalty shootout.

Overall, the ‘Miracle of Istanbul’ is one of the most celebrated events in football history. Dozens of documentaries have already been made covering it, as well as fictional films based on the event Desire (2011) and 15 minutes that shook the world (2009).

Directed by Mathieu Roose, Netflix cites it as the ‘definitive story’ of the event, starring Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard, Michael Owen, Rafa Benítez, Xabi Alonso, Didi Hamman and others.
