Dick Wolf’s major procedural is officially coming to Netflix, and it looks like we might be getting a big batch of episodes.
In a surprise last-minute addition to its April release roster, Netflix has inked a deal with NBCUniversal to bring classic, original law & Order Series on streaming platform for the first time.
Episodes of the iconic courtroom and police drama will start streaming from coming Monday. 20 April. However, international customers will have to sit out this, as this licensed pickup is strictly for netflix us Right now, even though you got SVU a few years ago.
A TV Institute: The Legacy of law & Order
For those unaware—or those who just need a refresher—law & Order It’s not just a television show; This is the blueprint for the modern procedural. Premiering in 1990, the series ran for 20 consecutive seasons during its original classic run, completely reshaping the television landscape and launching Dick Wolf’s vast procedural empire.
The brilliance of the show lies in its signature split format. The first half of the episode follows NYPD homicide detectives who investigate the crime and capture the suspects. The second part shifts to the District Attorney’s office, focusing on the legal maneuvering and court battles necessary to secure a conviction.
Over its multi-decade run, the series introduced us to famous, defining TV characters, including Jerry Orbach’s wisecracking detective Lennie Briscoe and Sam Waterston’s doggedly principled DA Jack McCoy. It’s extremely cozy, offering neatly wrapped up (and often “removed from the spotlight”) cases in each episode.
What seasons are coming to Netflix?
If you’re hoping to know the entirety of the show’s vast catalog, the exact episode count is still a bit shrouded in mystery – but we have some major clues.
While Netflix initially announced that they had licensed a “batch of different seasons,” we did some digging. We have successfully located the official title artwork located within Netflix’s servers that specifically matches season 8 And season 19.

Artwork within Netflix for Law & Order
Of course, we won’t know what seasons are coming until Monday, and we’ll keep you posted once we know more. Some long-running licensed shows on Netflix in the US and internationally have recently offered a select batch of episodes rather than the entire catalogue.
This is already the case with law and order elsewhere. With Peacock, despite being NBCUniversal’s in-house platform, it only hosts a very small 9-season selection of flagship shows. Hulu remains the best place to stream, as the entire 20-season classic run is currently available on the platform.
If the Netflix deal brings more than a dozen seasons of shows, it would be a huge competitive win for the platform’s licensed library.
The long-awaited return to the franchise
While this is the first time Original The flagship series will stream on Netflix Longtime subscribers will remember that the Dick Wolf franchise isn’t entirely new to the platform.
Over the years, it has had extremely popular spin-offs, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (SVU)Netflix was a major, heavy-hitting staple of the US library. However, SVU It was eventually removed from the service entirely as NBCUniversal began divesting its properties to consolidate Peacock.
