Live-Action Spin-Off: Quality Over Quantity

Ever since the Duffers launched their production company, Upside Down Pictures, fans have been anxiously awaiting details on the promised live-action film. stranger things By-products. While the producers were careful not to anger Netflix executives (joking about getting in trouble with co-CEO Ted Sarandos), they dropped some big hints about the show’s format. Some of this has been said before in various interviews, but he’s clearly confirming things in this podcast that he hasn’t said before.

First and foremost, the spin-off won’t revolve around Eleven, Mike, Dustin, or any of the Hawkins crew we’ve followed for the past decade. “It’s very early… but it’s for sure, it’s completely new characters, completely different,” the brothers confirmed.

When Horowitz asked if the new series would follow black Mirror-style compilation format, the creators immediately kicked off the theory. “It’s not an anthology show. It’s a set group of characters,” he confirmed.

Despite the pressure to cash in on the massive success of the flagship series, the Duffers made it abundantly clear that they are refusing to fast-track a spin-off just to commit to a release date. They’re currently balancing early development on the spin-off with writing an original feature film for Paramount, allowing the Netflix project to iterate until it’s just right.

The Duffers explained, “We’re being very careful. We don’t want to rush it. We don’t want it to be anything other than excellent.” “No one wants to make it just for the sake of making it. No one wants to do it just to continue Stranger Things. Like, it has to be amazing or it has to be forgotten. That’s kind of everyone’s mentality about it.”

When asked if he had hired showrunners, he said “maybe” several times but ultimately said, “I think it’s going to happen, but like I said, [we’re] Trying not to rush into it.”

Next Generation sequel rumors debunked

The final scene of the main series features Mike’s younger sister, Holly Wheeler, playing in a basement with a new generation of children, leading many fans and industry insiders to speculate that a direct “Next Generation” sequel is in the works.

However, the Duffers firmly shut down the idea that we’ll get a Stranger Things: The Next Generation sequel following Holly’s adventures.

“No, because that wasn’t even intended for that,” he explained in regards to the final scene. “It was really about passing the torch and [Mike] Remembering your childhood and saying goodbye to it. It’s clearly not setting up anything for the sequel.”

Furthermore, he pointed out that a direct sequel after Holi would not make any sense narratively without subverting the original show. “If Holi starts [see] It’s this weird thing, she’ll call her brother, and then it’ll be like we’re making Stranger Things again,” he laughed.

Instead, the brothers reiterated that the live-action spin-off currently in development is the only idea they have considered for expanding the universe. “We have an idea what we can do stranger thingsAnd we had it like seven years ago. So that’s what we’re trying to do now. [If] We had another good idea, we will do it.”

His new film is his current priority

He said, “We’ve become so used to this huge canvas… being able to tell a story in eight to ten hours.” “It’s really fun to teach our brains how to tell a story in such a limited amount of time. It’s like a Swiss watch, right? The best movies can’t have a single line that you don’t need.” Although the Paramount film is still in its early stages – the creators joked that the studio still doesn’t know what the pitch is – it’s clear the Duffers are completely focused on conquering the big screen before heading back to the Upside Down.
