At a time when most streaming series can barely go beyond ten episodes per season, polygamist Takes a decidedly old-school approach. Netflix’s new South African supernovela kicks off with an ambitious 22-episode run, encompassing a story that thrives on romance, betrayal and power struggles. This is not a series that aspires to reinvent television or garner critical acclaim. Instead, it focuses on providing the kind of entertainment that the genre has been known for over the decades.
Based on the best-selling novel by Sue Nyathi, polygamist Centers on businessman Jonasi Gamora (Sadumo Mtshali). He has built an impressive business empire and appears to have the perfect life. His marriage to Joyce Gamora (Gugu Gumede) seems flawless. However, behind closed doors, that picture-perfect world is built on lies and affairs.
As the series unfolds, Jonasi’s carefully constructed life begins to collapse. The women in his life, including wives, girlfriends, and confidants, become catalysts for chaos, exposing cracks that can no longer be hidden. The result is a story driven by jealousy, betrayal, manipulation and rapidly escalating family conflicts that moves at a rapid pace.
Easy to watch comfortable TV
polygamist Never tries to be anything other than a classic telenovela. The episodes are easy to watch, the story is straightforward and the pace keeps things moving. Major twists and complex plots are largely absent. Instead, the series adopts the familiar ingredients that have made the genre popular for decades. The result is comfortable television in its purest form.

That said, expectations should be kept in check when it comes to performance. The cast does solid work, but the acting rarely reaches the level of Netflix’s biggest international productions. The script sometimes relies on familiar tropes to move the story forward, and some of the dialogue can seem forced or overly dramatic.
Nevertheless, the producers clearly understand their audience. They know exactly how to make addictive soap. The relatively short episodes make the show particularly suitable for repeat viewings. Netflix also seems confident about the future of the series. The streamer has already hinted at continuing the story of Jonasi Gamora, suggesting that its plans extend far beyond these initial 22 episodes.

Instead, it offers exactly what fans of telenovelas have come to expect: plenty of drama, engaging characters, and a story that’s consistently easy to follow. While the acting and writing aren’t always uniformly strong, viewers looking for entertaining, low-commitment television will find this a worthwhile addition to Netflix’s catalog.
