Netflix and the BBC have teamed up for a brand new co-production focusing on one of the worst aviation disasters in history, Pan Am Flight 103, aka the Lockerbie bombing. After its initial broadcast on BBC in the UK, the series is finally coming to Netflix globally on July 30, 2026. This drama should not be confused with the Sky and Peacock series, Lockerbie: the search for truthStarring Colin Firth. That series was produced by Carnival Film & Television (the same studio behind last empire) and released in early 2025 to critical acclaim.
The Netflix iteration with the BBC is set to be filmed in 2024 in filming locations including Scotland, Malta and Toronto, Canada.

What is the Lockerbie bombing?
On December 21, 1988, Pan Am Flight 103 was on a transatlantic flight from Frankfurt to Detroit. After a short stopover in London, at exactly 19:00 while flying over the Scottish town of Lockerbie, a bomb planted in the aircraft destroyed the aircraft. All 243 passengers and 16 crew were killed.
There were further casualties after debris and large chunks of aircraft crashed into several houses in Lockerbie, resulting in the deaths of 11 residents.

It took a three-year investigation conducted by the FBI and Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary to issue arrest warrants for two Libyan nationals. Several years later, Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi released the two men, who were being tried in the Netherlands.
In 2001, Libyan intelligence officer Abdelbaset al-Megrahi was sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of 270 charges of murder in connection with the bombings.
It took several years, but in 2020, US officials convicted Abu Agila Mohammed Massoud Kheir al-Marimi, a Libyan citizen living in Algeria, for his role in the bombing and was detained in December 2022.

Because it is a BBC co-production, the six-part series first aired in the United Kingdom on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, premiering in mid-May 2025.
The series debuted to generally positive, though somewhat mixed, reviews from critics. Many praised the broad scope of the production and its focus on exhausting investigative work spanning from Scotland’s smallest police force to international intelligence agencies. Radio Times gave the series four stars, noting that it “impressively never loses the emotional core of its storytelling”, while the Evening Standard praised the apocalyptic practical effects and Connor Swindells’ determined but grounded performance, calling it “compelling, if disturbing, viewing”.
On the other hand, some critics felt the series struggled to distinguish itself from Sky’s iterations, with The Guardian writing that although it had “shocking and impressive moments, it mainly forgets to find any drama”. Despite some serious divisions regarding pacing, audience reception was incredibly strong. UK viewers overwhelmingly praised the respectfully crafted final episode on social media, which provided an emotional end to the devastating tragedy.
