During the headline Netflix Animation Showcase in Annecy, the audience got a big surprise when Netflix Animation Studios’ Hannah Minghella took the stage to unveil a new, work-in-progress look at an upcoming project set in the Willy Wonka universe. First unveiled this April and officially known as charlie vs chocolate factoryThis is definitely not your grandparents’ version of the classic candy-coated tale.
Instead of a whimsical musical about good behavior, Netflix is offering a serious, darkly comedic heist movie. Here’s a full rundown of everything revealed during the presentation, including details of the teaser work-in-progress footage!
Premise: The Ultimate Candy Heist
The exclusive teaser clip immediately sets a different tone for the franchise, starting with a scene of Charlie actively beating someone up on the street of Central London! it Charlie is not the go-lucky, wide-eyed optimist we remember. He and his friends are living in extreme poverty and are on the verge of being thrown out on the street. “Charlie, what’s all this about? We’re getting evicted,” one of his friends asks, prompting Charlie to reveal his desperate master plan: “Wonka’s got a priceless candy bar over there.”
Driven by a deep hatred of Wonka, Charlie and his scrappy crew (who are very similar to the crew recently unveiled for Ghostbusters) decide to settle the final score. “So, we’re going to rob the factory, right?” a crew member asks. “I mean, I think it’ll take us a good month to plan this whole thing.” However, Charlie is confident in his burglary, reassuring his team, “Relax, buddy. He’ll never see us coming.”
A pariah Wonka and the redesigned Oompa Loompas
So, where is Willy Wonka during all this? According to the new story, the eccentric chocolate maker has just been released from prison and is now completely untouchable.
Despite his disgraced status, Wonka still believes that he can make the world a better place, and says to himself, “I started this mess. I need to end it.” Charlie and Wonka appear to cross each other’s way during the robbery, leading to a tense conversation where Charlie demands, “Now remember, we made a deal. Get out safe and sound, my friends.” To which Wonka ominously replied: “I can be safe or healthy.”
The footage also gave us a look at the Oompa Loompas, whose design has been completely redesigned and are no longer human in this iteration, but rather several small round ball creatures that resemble creatures that appear to have been developed with the Minions in mind. When Charlie’s group encounters them, one character panics, “They’re real! What’s it doing?”
“quietly evaluating you,” There is a strong reaction from Wonka, which takes a toll on them.
The dark, British humor of the project was front and center throughout the clip. In a particularly hilarious exchange that references the fate of the children from the original story, a character marrieswales, “Look at him! It turned a little boy into a man, buddy!” Only to be fixed with: “Actually, it was a little girl. The boy drowned.”
Production status and release date
Before rolling the unfinished footage – which featured placeholder voice acting – Minghella gave viewers a detailed update on the film’s production timeline.
He said the film would feature “A new adventure, original songs, and a feast of new characters, and some surprise returns.” For those wondering how far along the animation is, both directors confirmed that the team currently has “About 50% of our rough layout complete, about 35% animation, and 10% lighting.” However, it is unclear when that footage was recorded.
As a result, the clip shown to the audience was a surreal mix of completed shots, some early animatics, and first pass 3D (with characters clipping through geometry). The film was incredibly colorful, with some perfectly composed scenes and lighting spectacular.
Because the animation process is still in its prime, fans will have to wait a little longer to see Charlie try to rob the chocolate factory. Minghella officially confirmed this charlie vs chocolate factory Netflix is expected to be a global hit 2027.
