After the huge success of monster of florence (il mostro) Last fall, Netflix officially gave the greenlight and began production on a new three-episode chapter of the gripping Italian true-crime series. Here’s everything we know so far about the return of the compilation.
As we reported ahead of its October release in August 2025, monster of florence It was initially presented as a four-part miniseries detailing the crimes of the most notorious serial killer in Italian history.. However, Netflix and the producers are now expanding the narrative into a full anthology format.
The first chapter, which premiered at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival before being released globally on Netflix, was a smash hit. It became the streamer’s most watched non-English language series globally in its first week and took home the prestigious Nastro d’Argento Grandi Serie award for Best Crime Series.
Now, the true-crime saga has rebooted to explore an all-new phase of the infamous investigation.
What to expect from the new chapter
If you recall our coverage of the first season, the original episode explored the initial line of inquiry known as the “Sardinian Lead.” This upcoming three-episode installment will move forward in time, focusing on the highly controversial “Snack Buddies” lead and specifically the character of Pietro Pacciani.
Pacciani was the primary suspect in eight brutal double murders that shocked Italy between 1968 and 1985. Shrouded in mystery and heavily scrutinized by the press, he was at the center of a marathon hearing filled with wild ups and downs.
Director and co-producer Stefano Sollima shared his vision for the extended series, revealing that the story was always going to be told in standalone arcs:
“We always imagined monster of florence As an anthology series: standalone stories, each dedicated to one of the different suspects in a series of crimes that shocked Tuscany and Italy between the 1970s and 1980s… an investigation that spanned more than 30 years.
After focusing on the Sardinian suspects, this time we move on to address perhaps the most famous, controversial and debated chapter of the entire incident: the story of Pietro Pacciani, convicted and later acquitted of the crimes, and his alleged accomplices, the notorious ‘Snack Buddies’, as the press dubbed them. A court case that divided Italian public opinion for decades. Perhaps this is why Pacciani’s case remains the most disturbing: guilt has never been proven, but has also never been completely ruled out.
