Netflix’s live-action remake Avatar The Last Airbender Returned for its second season in June 2026. Avatar The Last Airbender Season 2 ending explained
Hot on the heels of defeating the Fire Nation in the Northern Water Tribe at the end of Season 1, the latest batch of episodes sees Aang (Gordon Cormier) and his team – Katara (Kiaventio), Sokka (Ian Owsley), Appa and Momo – heading deeper into the Earth Kingdom. After Azula (Elizabeth Yu) conquers Omashu, they help guide the city’s refugees to the Earth Empire’s capital, Ba Sing Se – a stunning, impenetrable, but inherently corrupt city. Along the way they meet Toph Beifong (Mia Cech), a young, impetuous earthbender known as the Blind Bandit. After witnessing her mastery of earthbending, the team recruited her to impart her knowledge to Aang. Meanwhile, Azula proceeds to infiltrate Ba Sing Se. And Iroh (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee) and Zuko (Dallas Liu) head there too, both evil, powerless and struggling to find their identities.

Season 2 ends with a major conflict in the ancient Crystal Catacombs beneath Ba Sing Se. Princess Azula takes over the city. Furthermore, despite attempting to rekindle civilization with Katara, Zuko ultimately decides to stand with his sister when the battle begins. Aang fights Azula alone, but he is not powerful enough – even when he invokes the Avatar State. In the middle of the Avatar State, Aang briefly stumbles, and Azula takes advantage of this to fire lightning at him. Avatar lore suggests that if the avatar is killed while in the incarnation state, the cycle ends.
Later, Aang is taken to Appa, where Katara uses soul water From the Spirit Oasis at the North Pole in an attempt to bring him back to life. The healing properties of the water appear to work, but the series cuts to the credits before Aang fully regains consciousness. It’s no spoiler to say that yes, Aang does come back to life.
