For a series that is light-hearted and funny (granted, there is legitimate murder in these films, but I digress), enola holmes 3 Takes a depressing tone change that feels foreign to itself. Despite being the shortest entry (at 108 minutes compared to its two-hour-plus predecessors), EH3 is slow-paced because it takes itself too seriously. It features Enola more rigorously examining her identity – shaken by getting married in Tewkesbury while remaining true to herself and her Holmes surname – while she goes on a wild goose chase to save her endangered brother. It’s not that it creates a dull character arc; This may perhaps be the umpteenth time that film series screenwriter Jack Thorne has gone the “Enola Holmes wants to live up to the name” route, but it sacrifices the fun and kinetic energy that made the series delightful. The story itself does not warrant the dramatic tone it adopts.
Perhaps this reflects both MBB now being an adult and the creatives trying to age along with her and her audience. Then again, some of the greatest action stars like your Indiana Joneses or even your Sherlocks retained their eccentricities even as their actors aged. It’s also telling that the directors of the first two films change from Harry Bradbeer to Philip Bernatini, as the action feels more streamlined and mechanical, lacking the stylish qualities that made the predecessors enjoyable to watch. There are some enjoyable parts, such as when Enola gets another lesson about not trusting her government – she would probably leave Britain if she ever found out about Britain’s corrupt system once again – and Sharon Duncan-Brewster gives a charismatic performance as Moriarty, which her co-stars and the film itself should do. Still, it’s entertaining, but not as fun as the Enola adventure that came before it, which clearly shows franchise fatigue in real time.

As the titular lead investigates the disappearance of Unionist Sarah Chapman (we love a good revisionist history) in hopes of promoting her agency, Enola goes on a bigger adventure with higher stakes – getting convicted of murder. It probably should have been treated with the same seriousness as its less flashy third entry, but instead, this film, like the first, is a lot more fun. MBB has established this character as one of her most notable roles – maintaining the confident, funny image fans first began to love, which only grew stronger in different areas. From her amusing sibling banter with big brother Sherlock to her adorable romantic relationship with the ever-faithful Tewkesbury, it’s all just a delight. Keep in mind, this is who Enola goes ACAB with, as she works with David Thewlis as a gay police superintendent, and spoiler alert: it features one of the best villain deaths I’ve seen in a Netflix flick in some time. It hits all the right notes of a sequel and, despite being 15 minutes too long, is moderately entertaining and well-crafted.

Millie Bobby Brown demonstrated her status as a leading star (at least at the time), and the experience was extremely entertaining. Enola emerged as a formidable screen heroine in the 2020s and became an action star. Director Harry Bradbeer stylishly breaks the fourth wall and gives the film a low-key quality, Fleabag-kind of and giving it a fun tone that made me think of a mix between Nancy Drew And Pirates of the Caribbean. It all built up to a rooted heroine who wanted to prove her name and her place in the world as a clever Holmes who could stand out from the shadows of her brothers – remember when the series had Mycroft (Sam Claflin)? I’m still disappointed that it didn’t hit the big screen as much as originally planned, because in an alternate universe, it would have been a real crowd-pleaser, but if that were the case we probably wouldn’t have enough Enola. even if enola holmes 2 The best parts about this are, you have to respect the one who solved the case in the first place.
