This upcoming release continues the heavy summer season for J-drama fans on Netflix. Joining the likes of July releases your 25 years And holiday principleGate 24: Border (known domestically as Daikoukou gate24) promises to be a fascinating, suspenseful, and often humorous look at the front-line workers protecting Japan’s airports.
Here’s everything you need to know about the new drama coming to Netflix.
What is Gate 24: The Border about?
The 10-episode drama tackles the fast-paced and high-risk world of airport customs. With international crimes such as smuggling, fake passports and human trafficking becoming increasingly sophisticated, airport immigration and customs stand as the country’s last line of defence.
To handle the unprecedented increase in foreign visitors and eliminate traditional bureaucratic hurdles, a special unit reporting directly to the Cabinet Secretariat has been set up: gate24 (Global Airport Task Enforcement). However, the reality of the entity falls far short of its grand vision. GATE24, deemed an unwanted burden by other departments, is assigned to a small inspection booth away from the main gates, which handles mostly charter and small aircraft flights.
The story focuses on Mori Machi, a quirky new customs officer assigned to this ragtag unit. While Machi is absolutely brilliant at reading objects and figuring out the truth from stuff, she is frustratingly awkward when it comes to dealing with real people. As the underdog unit struggles over rules, regulations, and humanitarian concerns, they must learn to work together to overcome institutional barriers and become the last professionals standing on Japan’s border.
