The upcoming trial in Washington, DC involves Abu Agila Massoud, the man suspected of making the bomb that blew up the plane. According to the US Department of Justice (as reported BBC News), when interrogated in a Libyan detention facility in 2012, Massoud admitted his involvement in the attack on Pan Am Flight 103. Masood has since declared the confession to be false and made under duress, making it inadmissible in court. Massoud has a history of terrorist acts, notably the 1986 bombing of the Labelle discotheque in West Berlin, which killed three people.

The trial has been delayed several times to this point, for reasons ranging from Masood’s health to the myriad complications of the case, which is more than 35 years old. It was targeted to take place on April 20, 2026, but proceedings remain deadlocked.

The involvement of Abdullah al-Senussi, former intelligence chief and brother-in-law of late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, is also said to be involved. While Massoud faces trial in the United States, Senussi is currently facing trial for domestic torture in a Tripoli prison in Libya. Even if the United States charges him, it would be almost impossible for him to actually face trial in the United States.
