If you’ve been waiting for Juan Salvo to return to your screens, you may need to bundle up and relax – it looks like we’re in for a very long winter.

Over the past few dates, Netflix unveiled a massive slate of upcoming Argentinian films, series, and documentaries for 2026 and 2027. The announcement coincided with the streamer opening a new regional headquarters in the Villa Crespo neighborhood of Buenos Aires.

While the new slate is undeniably exciting — boasting heavy hitters like Pablo Larraín’s My Sad Dead and Juan Jose Campanella’s animated Mafalda series — eagle-eyed fans immediately noticed one glaring omission from the official 2026-2027 roster: Season 2. eternity.

For those who missed the news, the series got a season 2 renewal in early May last year, after its big breakout debut. The show remained in the global top 10 charts for 5 weeks, garnering 147.4 million watch hours and 27.3 million complete views. This is in addition to appearing on weekly charts in 88 countries. As of the end of 2025, the series has received 32.7 million views.

Given that the epic post-apocalyptic adaptation starring Ricardo Darín is arguably the biggest TV show ever to come out of Argentina (definitely for Netflix, but easily the biggest), its absence from the two-year slate should ring alarm bells.

Luckily, we’re not completely left in the dark and now we have an update on where the sci-fi hit is headed. Bad news? We must have been waiting for a long time.

Why is The Eternity Season 2 taking so long?

Talking to trade outlet DeadlineFrancisco Ramos, Netflix’s vice president of content for Latin America, confirmed that season 2 is currently in “advanced development”. However, in a practical sense, this means that the cameras have not been turned on yet.

So, why such a huge delay for a show that’s already been renewed? According to Ramos, the second season is massively expanding in budget, scope, and concept.

“The ambition has gone to a new level,” Ramos told Deadline. “Things are already happening, but it’s not really with the actors on the screen, it’s technical with some VFX concept. The actual shoot with the talent on the screen, we don’t know. [the dates] “Yet because this is much bigger than Season 1…”

Ramos also said that the way Season 1 ended meant that the series, directed by Bruno Stagnaro, would be directed by Hector G. Osterheld and Francisco Solano López’s iconic graphic novel needs to step up its game to continue faithfully.

Will there be a season 3 of The Eternaut?

There is a silver lining in this disappointing production update: The delay is partially due to the creative team mapping out a potential Season 3.

As we reported last year, series producer Mattias Mosterin of K&S Productions originally noted a tentative plan to wrap up the story over two seasons. Now, it seems the show’s phenomenal success has changed that timeline.

Ramos explained, “We need to figure out how we deliver everything we have to offer in Season 2, while also being able to continue that for a potential Season 3.”

When will The Eternity Season 2 be on Netflix?

This is where the news becomes especially difficult for fans. Because the show requires such heavy visual effects and the cast hasn’t even started filming yet, an imminent release is completely off the table.

When Deadline asked Ramos if a launch date in 2027 was possible, his answer was quite cautious: “I would definitely try to get on stream next year.” [2027]But I can’t promise anything.

Given Ramos’ hesitation, the heavy VFX workload ahead, and the fact that Netflix intentionally removed The Eternanaut from its official 2026-2027 Argentina slate, fans should brace themselves. While a release is expected in late 2027, we won’t actually see Juan Salvo’s desperate struggle for survival continue until 2028.
