After the massive success of the first two films, Netflix’s hit action franchise Extraction is officially moving forward with its highly anticipated third installment. thanks to a New report from deadlineWe now have confirmation of the key returning cast and exciting new details about the creative team.
Chris Hemsworth has officially closed his deal to reprise the role of invincible mercenary Tyler Rake. He is also joined by Idris Elba and Golshifteh Farahani.
Farahani has been a core part of the franchise since the beginning. She plays the role of Nick Khan, Tyler Rake’s trusted handler, mercenary partner and closest ally. She appeared in the first Extraction in 2020, pulling strings from the control panel before jumping into the final firefight, and her role was massively expanded in Extraction 2 (2023), where she fought side by side with Rake for the majority of the film.
Elba is a recent addition, but he played a key role in the establishment of this third film. He made a surprise cameo in extraction 2 As a mysterious operator known only as Alcott (or “the man in the suit”). He is the one who approaches the recovering Tyler Rake at the beginning of the second film and gives him his mission, and he returns at the end of the film to rescue Rake and Nick from prison – in exchange for working for his mysterious boss. Elba is currently nearing the end of shooting the second Luther movie for Netflix, in addition to producing a new documentary with King Charles coming out later this year.

Behind the camera, stuntman-turned-director Sam Hargrave is set to direct his third film extraction film. However, there is one notable change in the writer’s room: David Weil (Hunter, citadel) is writing the script for the third film. The last two installments were written by Joe Russo.
Plot details are being kept under wraps for now, but fans can expect another massive, globe-trotting spectacle.
Production will begin this summer
As now confirmed, production on the sequel is expected to begin in the summer, which lines up perfectly with our previous reporting from this year. We previously reported that Extraction 3 was being set for a 2026 shoot and filming was expected to take place in Australia and Europe. Our understanding is that the cameras will begin running June 1 and run through October 9, 2026. Sydney, Australia is being eyed for most of the shooting.
Hemsworth’s schedule has been a balancing act, but the start of summer allows him to complete his upcoming project Cockroach (which shoots this month) before getting back into the tactical gear of the rake.
The Russo Brothers (Anthony and Joe), along with Angela Russo-Ottstot, Michael Disco and Ari Costa, will continue to produce through their AGBO banner. Hemsworth and Benjamin Grayson are also producing for Wild State.
Expanding the Extraction Universe
The Extraction franchise remains one of Netflix’s crown jewels, with both previous films ranked on Netflix’s list of most popular English movies. The success of the main films has led to serious internal discussion about the expansion of the universe. As we recently reported, Netflix and AGBO are aggressively expanding with multiple spin-offs and series set within the Extraction world, meaning the upcoming Mission of the Rake could be a launching pad for an even larger cinematic universe. Both spin-offs, Mercenaries: An Extraction Series And tigoWrapped production last month.
We’ll be keeping a close eye on casting news as we get closer to the summer production window. In the meantime, for full details on what to expect, who’s returning, and ongoing production updates, bookmark our comprehensive Extraction 3 preview guide here.
