blue lock is a Japanese sports-thriller anime series produced by Eight Bit and directed by Tetsuki Watanabe and Shunsuke Ishikawa (season 1). The anime is an adaptation of the manga of the same name by author Munayuki Kaneshiro. The manga began serialization in Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine in August 2018 and is still ongoing, with 38 volumes published and over 50 million copies in circulation as of September 2025.
The second season of the anime has been the subject of much criticism, with fans highlighting its poor animation. Given the manga’s stunning illustrations by Yusuke Nomura, Blue Lock deserves very high quality animation.

Enter Jinpachi Ego, who, with the permission of the Japan Football Association, has a radical new project to bring Japanese football into a bold new era. Ego aims to develop the world’s best striker, and recruits 300 talented under-18 players to participate in Blue Lock, a specially created exclusive facility that will put players through grueling challenges and matches to unlock the players’ latent abilities and ultimately find the diamond in the rough with Ego to become the world’s best. Isagi Yoichi is one of 299 players selected for the Blue Lock, and to achieve his dream, he must be willing to crush the dreams of other participants to become Japan’s hope for World Cup glory.
