What is I Am Frankelda about?

“In 19th-century Mexico, Frankelda is a talented writer whose dark stories are ignored and dismissed. Forced to suppress her voice, she refuses to give up, even as many try to silence her. But when she is pushed into her subconscious, the monsters she has created come alive. Led by Herneval, a troubled prince torn between dreams and nightmares. Guided by this, she must restore the balance between fantasy and reality before the fall of both realms. Meanwhile, as Frankelda and Hernevel draw closer, she must confront a love that challenges her existence and reclaim her power as a storyteller. And reveal horrors beyond his creation.

A passion project for the Ambriz Brothers
The film is an extremely personal project for its directors, writers and producers, Arturo and Roy Ambriz. Speaking about the new trailer and upcoming release, the brothers shared a heartfelt statement (via a Netflix press release) about what the film means to them:
“As brothers, we grew up inventing worlds together, drawing, playing, imagining. Over time we understood that imaginary characters were not only companions but also guides. Sometimes they felt closer than the people around us. They provided us with courage, wisdom and solace. We believe imagination is not an escape from reality but a way of understanding it. A way of turning truth into delicious pieces. I’m Frankelda Storytelling Lifelong comes from love.
At the heart of the film is the relationship between Francelda and Harneval: creator and creation, voice and echo. We are attracted to the mystery of thoughts. We don’t know whether we invented them or they invented us. We only know that when He comes, He asks to be brought into the world.
This film is a dream for us. It has everything we love from childhood: monsters, drama, music, colors, intensity, culture, and world building. We are moved by characters who feel deeply, who struggle, who change. Frankelda is about a creator who insists on being heard, even when everything around her says no.”
