Big news for signing families! Taking a big step forward for accessibility, Netflix is making its Kids & Family library more inclusive than ever.
like before Reported last week by indiewireNetflix has officially teamed up signup mediaAn online provider of sign language interpretations, to launch American Sign Language (ASL) interpretations on its platform.
According to Netflix, this new integration is now available for the first time and covers 89 titles (already up from the 73 titles initially announced), Including Netflix Kids & Family titles– Over 200 hours of content in total featuring 41 of your favorite franchises.
The best part? Deaf actors bring your children’s favorite characters to life in ASL. This means you’ll get authentic, lifelike interpretations for characters like Pikachu (pokemon horizons), Captain Barnacles (Octonauts), and Ms. Frizzle (magic school bus ride again).
Instead of forcing users to search for separate, hard-coded ASL versions of the show, SignUp Media operates through a Google Chrome browser extension (and is therefore limited to the web for now). Once installed, the signing is overlayed right on top of the show. You can move the interpreter window, resize it, or pop it out to fit wherever works best for your sofa setup. (Signup also notes that customizable backgrounds are coming in the future to help deaf/blind users better track hand movements!)
The company also supports Disney+, YouTube, and Peacock, with Disney+ having the strongest title lineup ever with 160 titles.
According to IndieWire, SignUp Media has committed to an incredible level of casting authenticity. Each hour of on-screen interpretation requires three to four hours of preparation, with performers analyzing tone, pace, and unique show-specific terminology. They also play characters well on screen, such as hiring an Asian deaf actor wish dragon And for a Cuban deaf artist Vivo.
Alyssa Beniero, Senior Manager of Strategy & Innovation at Netflix, expressed the streamer’s excitement: “With ASL now joining subtitles, subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing (SDH), dubbing, and audio description (AD), members can enjoy our content, we are making sure our deaf and hard of hearing members have more ways to experience the stories they love.”
The implementation works great, allowing you to transcribe an ASL window (which is essentially a YouTube video synced with the timestamp of the Netflix player).
