If you need a refresher, the Lionsgate co-production debuts on Netflix on March 6. Directed and co-written by Australian filmmaker Patrick Hughes, the film stars Reacher sensation Alan Ritchson as a hardened Army Ranger trainee who finds himself face-to-face with a deadly space force.
The first film left a lot of questions unanswered, opting for a bold, difficult ending. Speaking to The Wrap, Hughes explained that the ambiguity was entirely intentional, fighting for a “surprising” conclusion reminiscent of 70s and 80s cinema.

“I said to Netflix, ‘I think more than anything, people want to know — what’s [Ritchson’s] Name? Where are they from? What do they want? What’s going on?” Hughes explained. “Do we really think that in the first 24 hours of being hit, we will know where they are from, what they want and how to control them? No, it’s just shock and awe.”
However, Hughes has promised that War Machine 2 will provide the answers fans want. When asked whether the robot pirates were aliens themselves or something else was driving them from the home world, Hughes assured fans that in the sequel, “you’ll find out.”
Although no official cast list has been announced by Netflix yet for the sequel, Alan Ritchson will be back in action.
Per deadlineHughes is to direct and co-write the screenplay with James Beaufort. In addition to his directing and writing duties, Hughes will produce the sequel with his producing partner Greg McLean through his Giant Film banner. He will be joined by fellow producers Todd Lieberman and Alex Young of Hidden Pictures, as well as Rich Cook of Range Media Partners, with Valerie Blythe Sharp joining the team as executive producer.
