Get ready to swing your swords for the last time. Following the explosive recent release of its second season, Netflix has officially announced today that the fan-favorite animated series Devil May Cry has been renewed for a third and final season.
The renewal comes as no surprise considering the show’s stellar performance. Season 2 debuted to rave reviews and is currently on Netflix’s Global Top 10 list. In fact, during its run so far, the anime has spent four weeks in the Netflix Global Top 10. Season 1 racked up an impressive 21.7 million views in 2025, while Season 2 is already attracting bigger numbers, accumulating 6.4 million views in its first two weeks on the streamer.
Our understanding is that Season 3 will be a shorter final season, but this is subject to change. It’s been in development for quite some time, so it’s not a complete refresh for the animated title. What’s on Netflix had been eyeing a renewal for the final season for several weeks ahead of the release of Season 2.
Wrapping up the story makes perfect sense from a narrative standpoint, especially given the surprising season 2 finale. As we previously covered in our last breakdown, the secondary races leave us on the brink of an all-out war. After pushing Dante back to Earth through the rift and sealing it behind him with his father’s sword, Virgil remains in Hell to challenge Mundus for control of Makai. With Virgil declaring Hell his home and plotting a future invasion of Earth—and Lady discovering that her own father is a demonic clown playing double agent in the court of Mundus—Season 3 promises a bittersweet, heartbreaking reunion.

Showrunner Adi Shankar always has a grand roadmap for Dante and crew. In a statement addressing the renewal, Shankar revealed the main structure behind the acclaimed Capcom adaptation:
“For those of you paying attention to the episode names, I’ve been showing you the structure the whole time.
It was always Dante’s Divine Comedy with guns and red coats.
Season 1 was Inferno.
Season 2 was Purgatorio.
Season 3 will be Paradiso.
These three seasons make up ‘The Force Edge Saga’. From the beginning, ‘The Force Edge Saga’ was designed as a movie trilogy disguised as a television series.
This structured approach is something Shankar previously teased in a recent interview with What’s on Netflix. Discussing his long-term outlook, Shankar said that he is not one to make things arbitrary:
“I need to know where the plane is landing. The point is to take the audience on a ride. It’s not an ego thing, it’s about taking you on a journey with these characters. So I know where it’s going to go.”
He also highlighted why characters like Virgil are so important to this closing chapter. Shankar said of Dante’s brother, “He’s the kind of guy who can be the most dangerous person in a room just by standing completely still.” “She doesn’t need to talk, her presence does the talking. Her composure is what I was most excited to bring to life.”
Based on Capcom’s hit video game IP and brought to life by powerhouse animation house Studio Mir (legend of korra, Voltron: The Great Defenders), the series follows a high-stakes supernatural battle. If you need a refresher, here’s the official summary:
“In this animated adaptation of the popular Capcom game and from the vision of Adi Shankar, sinister forces are at play to open the gate between the human and demon realms. At the center of it all is Dante, an orphaned demon-hunter who is unaware that the fate of both worlds hangs around his neck.”
The talented voice cast that brings “The Force Edge Saga” to life includes johnny yong bosh As Dante, Robbie Daymond As Virgil, and Scout Taylor-Compton As a lady.
