manrico giampedroni
Manrico Giampedroni, the hotel cabin service director, was the last survivor to be rescued from the ship.
While trying to find missing passengers, he fell 20 feet from a door and was trapped in a restaurant with a broken leg. In the documentary, he described how he found a frying pan nearby and started banging it to attract the attention of rescue workers. He was found 36 hours after the ship sank.
Because Giampedroni had responded late to the evacuation – although he claimed in the document that confusion over Captain Francesco’s orders had ensured that everything was fine when in fact it was not – he was also charged with a crime. He soon faced trial, was convicted, and soon faced charges of multiple murders, negligence and shipwreck. On July 20, 2013, according to the Italian court, Giampedroni was sentenced to two and a half years in prison along with four others – crisis coordinator Roberto Ferrarini, first officer Ciro Ambrosio, helmsman Jakob Rusli Bin, third officer Silvia Coronica, all of whom were given separate sentences that were less than three years. But in the Italian criminal justice system, if the sentence is between 18 and 34 months, it is unlikely that the prosecution will be able to see the inside of a prison cell. Thus he probably did not serve any prison sentence, opting instead for community service or home detention. The punishment given to Giampedroni has long been served.
However, no information has been found about his life today.
