Netflix is gearing up to cool things down this summer The Whisper ManAn all-new crime thriller starring Robert De Niro, Adam Scott and Michelle Monaghan. We just got the first look at the upcoming adaptation, which is officially set to arrive on Netflix globally on August 28, 2026.
The new film marks Netflix’s sixth major collaboration with AGBO, the powerhouse production company founded by the Russo Brothers (the team behind the massive Netflix hit). The Gray Man and continuously increasing extraction Franchise).

What is the story of The Whisper Man?
“If you leave the door half open, you’ll soon hear a whisper. If your window is left open, you’ll hear it tapping on the glass. If you’re lonely, sad and blue, the Whisper Man will come for you.”
That thrilling playground poem sits at the center of the new film.
According to the official synopsis from Netflix, the story revolves around a widowed crime writer whose 8-year-old son is suddenly kidnapped. Desperate, he is forced to turn to his estranged father – a retired police detective – for help. Together, they discover a sinister connection between a recent kidnapping and a decades-old cold case involving a convicted serial killer known locally as “The Whisper Man”.
When children begin disappearing and the old playground rhyme begins to circulate once again, the retired detective who originally locked up the so-called Whisper Man must spring back into action.
The film’s main cast includes Robert De Niro, Michelle Monaghan, Adam Scott, Hamish Linklater, Owen Teague, Axton Luca Porto, and Will Brill.
Speaking to USA TODAY, Joe Exclusive new photos releasedStar Adam Scott opens up about the surreal experience of acting alongside his lifelong idol Robert De Niro. While he was a fan since he was 11 years old – he even had photos of the acting legend pinned to his middle school locker – Scott admitted he “never got used to it,” recalling how his wife had to remind him that it was okay to casually ask De Niro questions about The Irishman between takes. Beyond the behind-the-scenes fanboying, Scott emphasized the thriller’s wrenching emotional weight. As a father of two, he said the audience would easily connect with the “complete emotional and physical nightmare” and that his character feels “complete powerlessness” when his young son is kidnapped into the terrifying orbit of a serial killer.
Director James Ashcroft also highlighted the film’s sinister tone, explaining to the outlet that the film “reveals itself in layers of increasing tension and dread” by grounding the nightmare in a familiar, normal setting. While Ashcroft contemplates The Whisper Man Originally a complex story about fathers and sons, it is imbued with a deeply troubling anxiety. To achieve this haunting atmosphere, the filmmaker revealed he mined similar territory from iconic psychological thrillers like The Silence of the Lambs, Prisoners, and Zodiac, hoping to emulate the way those genre classics left an indelible mark on audiences through complex relationships and powerhouse performances.
