Based on the beloved Danish crime novels by Jussi Adler-Olsen, an English-language adaptation was developed for Netflix by Scott Frank.queen’s stake, Atheist) and Chandni Lakhani. The first season premiered in May 2025, receiving rave reviews and massive viewership – spending six weeks in the Global Top Ten – quickly leading to a Season 2 renewal in August of the same year.
Now, Netflix has officially confirmed who will return to solve the next cold case, along with a list of new characters and an official synopsis for S2, which reads:
“DCI Carl Mork leads the maverick Department Q from the basement of an Edinburgh police station, charged with previously unsolvable cases. This wildly funny, inspiring show offers all the pleasures of a procedural, but also takes us into the complex mysteries of not only the cases but the detectives themselves.”
Executive producer Rob Bullock also teased what to expect from the new season’s central mystery, saying: “This season, Carl and his band of misfits tackle a terrifying crime lurking in the highest echelons of Scottish society. This is a story for our times: rich and powerful people who believe they are above the law. Carl, of course, knows otherwise. It’s a pleasure to work with master storyteller Scott Frank once again along with the rest of the team. We applaud Netflix’s courage in letting them loose once again.”

Manda Levine, who oversees the series with Jessica Burdett for Netflix, said: “Season 1 of Department Q made us laugh and cry; it shocked and amused us; we fell in love with the characters and the incredibly vivid and iconic world that Scott Frank and his amazing team created in one of our most favorite cities. It was wholeheartedly embraced by audiences in Scotland, the rest of the UK and around the world, it was thrilling.
