Get ready, animation fans! The Annecy International Animation Film Festival is just around the corner, and Netflix is bringing an absolutely monstrous slate to France this year.
As we reported in our coverage of Netflix’s initial Annecy lineup a few weeks ago, we already knew that heavy hitters like Brad Bird Ray Gunnhighly anticipated Ghost Busters animated series, and Ricky Gervais’ street cats Were going towards the festival. But if you thought that was it, think again. Netflix recently revamped its entire schedule, and it’s added massive new surprises, including a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory spin-off and a stacked anime slate that will hopefully add a few more.
As a reminder, this year, the Annecy Film Festival will run from June 21 to June 27, with Netflix presenting its program on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Get ready for a chocolate factory trip with a difference. As unveiled last month and executive-produced by and starring Taika Waititi as Willy Wonka (who spent years behind literal bars for turning a child into a blueberry), this new animated feature sees him return to a bittersweet world. Teenage Charlie Pelly (voiced by) Heartstopper’s Kit Connor) and his friends plot a factory robbery to steal a priceless Wonka Bar and save their homes from eviction. Netflix will show special highlights in the “Next on Netflix Animation” showcase.

As we mentioned in our initial preview, visionary director Brad Bird (Incredible, iron giant) is finally bringing its 30-plus year passion project to life with Skydance Animation, and its first look was revealed last month ahead of its release later this year.
Set in an imagined 1939 alternate future, “Metropia”, the film follows private eye Raymond Gunn as he becomes entangled in a web of aliens, murder, and a multimedia star named Venus Nova. The voice cast is staggering, including Sam Rockwell, Scarlett Johansson, and Tom Waits. We now know that Bird will be on stage at Theater Bonlieu on Wednesday, June 24, for an in-depth conversation moderated by stop-motion legend Peter Lord of Aardman.

Do you think you know Cinderella? Charan is flipping the script. Ali Wong voices Lilith, a misunderstood stepsister who accidentally turns her sister Margot (Stephanie Soo) into a frog and leaves the kingdom for a mean girl. He must team up with Cinderella (Amanda Seyfried) to set the fairy tale right.
Directors Alice Tzu and John Ripa will host a special “Work-in-Progress” session on Tuesday, June 23, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process.

On Tuesday, June 23, Netflix is hosting a dedicated panel called “Netflix Anime: Bold Stories, Boundless Worlds.” With over 150 million Netflix members globally tuning in to the anime, it’s going to be a blockbuster showcase.

Following its world premiere as part of Annecy Presents programming, the feature film is directed by Yuki Igarashi (Jujutsu Kaisen, Star Wars: Visions). Inspired by Osamu Tezuka’s Princess Knight, it tells the story of a lone hero who challenges harsh destiny in a beautifully crafted world.

Kyoto Animation brings us to a steam-powered alternate 20th century Kyoto. An eccentric boy and a dedicated girl team up to discover the secrets of the “20th Century Electrical Catalog” while exploring the age of electricity. Episode 1 will also compete in the Official TV Film Competition of Annecy.

Expanding on our previous report, we now have confirmation that on Wednesday, June 24, Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan will join showrunners Ben Hibon and Elliot Cullen to unveil a world exclusive preview of the upcoming high-end animated series produced in partnership with Sony Pictures Animation, which is now confirmed for a 2027 launch.

Ricky Gervais brings his signature social commentary to the wild streets of Britain. Gervais is the creator, director and star of this adult animated sitcom about a group of stray cats looking for companionship. As promised in the initial lineup, Gervais is hosting a masterclass on Thursday, June 25, where lucky participants will have the chance to screen two episodes before they drop globally in August.
Special Screenings and Contests
Overall, Netflix isn’t just about panels.
- Kpop Demon Hunters Sing-Along: Celebrating the one-year anniversary of its history-making Oscar win, Netflix is hosting a massive outdoor sing-along screening of Kpop Demon Hunters by Lake Annecy on Wednesday, June 24. We will definitely sing loudly there.
- Official TV Film Competition: In addition to Sparks of Tomorrow, Netflix has two other heavy hitters competing: an episode of Long Story Short titled “Shira Can’t Cook,” and a highly anticipated new Love, Death + Robots episode titled “How Zeke Got Religion.”
