It’s a sad day for Stars Hollow fans. Netflix has now weighed in and officially confirmed that the beloved series Gilmore Girls is leaving the streaming service globally, with its last day on the platform in the US set for June 30.
In a heartfelt statement on X, Netflix addressed The group of fans agreed directly to one of the show’s most iconic quotes:
“It’s a show? It’s a lifestyle. It’s a religion. We’re sad to say that Gilmore Girls seasons 1-7 will be leaving Netflix in the US on June 30. Join us in raising a cup of coffee for every fan who watched Stars Hollow.”
The last day of viewing takes effect on June 30, with the actual removal planned for July 1. Netflix previously declined to comment on our findings. Interestingly, Netflix only confirmed the US in its post, although our understanding is that it is global.
The writing was on the wall
For eagle-eyed fans and streaming trackers, this heartbreak isn’t entirely unexpected. By 2022, our exclusive reporting on the streaming license had indicated that Netflix’s global hold on the series was set to expire by July 1, 2026.

Earlier this month, third-party tracking sites marked July 1 as the impending removal date and it was visible in the Last Chance to Watch section. However, we found a ray of hope. Since Netflix actively suppressed “leaving soon” warnings while they were quietly trying to hammer out a last-minute renewal deal, the absence of a notice on the show’s Netflix page led many to believe that negotiations were ongoing with Warner Bros. Television. Unfortunately, no deal was reached to save the original seven seasons.
Gilmore Girls’ departure marks another major loss in the ongoing streaming wars. Warner Bros. Discovery is aggressively retooling its most popular legacy shows — like Friends, The Vampire Diaries and Gossip Girl — to strengthen its own streaming platform, Max. Given its massive viewership – with over 3.7 billion viewing hours between 2023 and 2025 alone – the franchise is a crown jewel that Warner Bros. is especially eager to bring in-house.

What happens to Netflix original ‘A Year in the Life’?
With the original series packing their bags, fans are naturally wondering about the fate of the 2016 revival, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. You might assume that because it has “Netflix Original” branding it’s safe from licensing drama, but that’s not the case.
Because the revival was a co-production and the underlying IP is solely owned by Warner Bros., Netflix only paid for the exclusive 10-year streaming window. Based on current information, the four-part revival is set to depart from Netflix on November 25, 2026 – exactly ten years after its premiere on the platform. Since Netflix couldn’t secure a deal to keep the mothership series, it’s incredibly unlikely that they’ll extend the lease on the revival before November comes around, but fingers crossed, we’re wrong on that. We have reached out for comment.
Will we ever get a season 2 of ‘A Year in the Life’?
As for a possible season 2 of A Year in the Life? Fans have been demanding more since Rory’s famous “final four words”, but expectations are low. Over the years, artists such as Lauren Graham and Kelly Bishop have expressed doubt about a comeback, citing the difficulty of getting busy casts back together.
Now that the streaming rights are reverting to Warner Bros. Discovery, any future continuation or spin-off will likely bypass Netflix entirely and be developed exclusively for Max.
If you haven’t finished your rewatch, now is the time to grab a big mug of coffee from Luke’s Diner and start getting over your nerves. You have until June 30th to say goodbye!
