Grab your tissues and get ready to say goodbye. Netflix has officially announced that the highly anticipated final film, permanent heart failureWill arrive globally on July 17, 2026.

The release date announcement comes exactly four years to the day when the first season of the beloved drama arrived on Netflix in 2022. To celebrate the news, Netflix unveiled a brand new social property showcasing the cast growing up together throughout the season, culminating with the July 17 release date and a brand new behind-the-scenes image of the cast on set for the last time.

As we cover here what’s on Netflix, it’s been a busy few months for the Heartstopper crew. We tracked the film from the time production officially began until the end of filming, when the title Heartstopper Forever was officially confirmed.

Most recently, we also learned of some massive changes (and returns) to the cast list. British acting veterans Anna Maxwell Martin and Derek Jacobi are joining the Osmanverse crew established for the final film, as well as the return of Olivia Colman as Nick’s mother, Sarah.

So, what can we expect from the final chapter of Nick and Charlie’s story? Netflix provided us with the official synopsis for the final film:

“Nick and Charlie are inseparable, but as Nick prepares to go off to university and Charlie finds new independence at school, the reality of a long-distance relationship begins to dawn on them. Doubts take over, and their relationship faces its biggest challenge yet. Meanwhile, their friends are also going through the ups and downs of love and friendship, facing the bitter challenges of growing up and moving on. Can first love really last forever? Is it?”

Alice Osman talks about the transition from season to movie

Along with the date announcement, Netflix released a new quiz with creator Alice Osman, which raised a major question on fans’ minds: why conclude the story with a movie instead of a traditional fourth season?

Osman shared, “I completely understand that fans are a little apprehensive. It’s a big change from what we know.” “But once I started seeing the whole vision, I knew it would be far more beautiful than a regular season. We’re feeling very ambitious about what’s possible in the film format. Without needing episode-ending cliffhangers or a new twist every episode, every part of Heartstopper could be scaled up to a higher quality to create something memorable, sophisticated and atmospheric.”

Osman also revealed the emotional core of the finale, which will be largely based on the upcoming sixth and final volume of the graphic novel series. With Nick going off to university, the reality of a long distance relationship becomes a major obstacle.

Osman explained, “At 18 and 17, Nick and Charlie are rapidly approaching their adult lives. Many teen relationships don’t survive that crucial moment of change.” “Are Nick and Charlie in love forever? If they are, why? I wanted the film to capture this transitional moment for them as a couple – from teen to adult, from teen romance to forever love, from the past to the future.”

According to the producer, the film will follow Charlie “finding a new sense of confidence and independence and overcoming some of her old demons”, while Nick is facing “a bit of a crisis about his future” and is not sure who he is without Charlie.

Behind the camera, there are some notable changes for the finale. While Osman naturally returned as producer and writer, directing duties for the film were handed over to Wash Westmoreland (still alice, Colette).

Fans will also be thrilled to see that series leads Kit Connor and Joe Locke have been elevated to executive producers for the film, sharing the title with Patrick Walters, Ian Canning, Emile Sherman, Alice Osman, and veteran Heartstopper director Euros Lynn. See-Saw Films once again serves as the production company.

The main cast returning for the finale includes William Gao (Tao), Yasmin Finney (Elle), Corinna Brown (Tara), Kizzy Edgell (Darcy), Toby Donovan (Isaac), Jenny Walser (Tori), Rhea Norwood (Imogen) and Leela Khan (Sahar).
