Netflix’s decision to remove Plug On borough That immediately turned into one of the streamer’s worst and most debated cancellations of the year after just one season. There was a massive media uproar earlier this week following the news that the Duffer Brothers-produced sci-fi series would not be returning for Season 2. Between the business of Hollywood attributing behind-the-scenes studio politics and clearly frustrated cast members breaking their silence directly to fans, there’s a lot to unpack. But while the rumor mill is in full swing at the moment, a deeper look into the actual viewership metrics reveals a more familiar story.
The cancellation comes at an incredibly odd time for the show, considering that the stars and creators are currently promoting it with FYC campaigns ahead of Emmy voting, which kicks off on Monday. While FYC campaigns aim to portray the show in a positive light, there’s no doubt a permanent dark cloud looming over it now, and we’ll see if that affects its chances of a nomination or two.
In a recent interview with hollywood reporter, Geena Davis breaks her silence on cancellation, He expressed surprise that a show with such a strong viewership was discontinued.
“Creator, who became our beloved, Dear friends, Before the news came out we were able to tell us, And we are all very disappointed,Davis told the publication, Noting that no reason was clearly given to the artists for the decision.

“sincerely, I dont know what happen, the Oscar-winning actress continued. “I think it’s probably rare that a show wasn’t picked up and it was announced that it wasn’t being picked up while it was still in the top 10. We did not expect this.“
Davis offered a ray of hope for fans who may have been hesitant to stream the canceled series. According to him, The creators were actively encouraged to conclude the narrative in Season 1. “The producers told us from the beginning that the ending of the first season of the series was not going to be so difficult, that someone had advised them, ‘Make it your thing. And if you come back to do another year, make it your thing,” Davis explained hollywood reporter. “And we really did. At last a little hint that maybe not everything has gone well, But that’s a whole other story. And if we had made it as a limited series, So it would have been a big hit, And everyone will be happy.“
Now, a second artist has broken his silence about the cancellation. speaking in a video on instagram tomorrowActor Dennis O’Hare said:
“So it’s Saturday, and I’m just thinking about the fact that Netflix canceled borough And how disappointed I really am because it was such a great show. It was a great show, and people seem to really like it. I’m amazed at how many people came up to me and talked about how much they loved the show — and not just, you know, older people, but I’m talking about anyone, people who are, you know, in their 30s and 40s with kids. It seemed like everyone found something to relate to.
Anyway, I guess there’s still a few days left until Emmy voting ends, so everyone should vote borough. You can vote for me if you want, but you can also vote for Bill Pullman and Alfre Woodard and Alfred Molina and Geena Davis and Clark Peters, Seth Numrich, Alice Kremmelberg. borough For the best series and, you know, stick it on Netflix and tell them they made a mistake, you know, because I think that would be sweet revenge. Anyway, I love this show, I miss it, and, you know, whatever.”

growing media swirling around borough‘Cancellation
Reaction and media swirl around borough This has been particularly rapid compared to most cancellations. It was Deadline who first broke the news earlier this week, though it’s worth noting that Netflix PR themselves rarely confirm cancellations (speaking from experience), and they certainly don’t issue press releases announcing that a show has been axed unless it’s in the form of a final season announcement.
Of course, the fire of cancellation was then fanned, quite dramatically hollywood reporterWho cite sources Saying that Netflix was intentionally canceling the show because of the Duffer Brothers’ creator borough and creator of stranger thingsDramatically walked out of the Paramount deal with Netflix actually backfired on them. They cite this as the main underlying reason and also mention the high budget of the series, which is significant.
While I wouldn’t argue that studio politics often play a role in cancellations, the only reservation I have about THR’s reporting is that borough It dashed expectations on the viewership front. It just didn’t happen. As we covered when we talked about the cancellation at the beginning of the week (and in our Top 10 reports) Since debut and in our constantly updated upgrade-status Prediction Guide), the series has been in the danger zone in terms of viewership since the beginning. We know this because you can compare the show’s performance against previous years and predict where it is, something most trades don’t want to do.
We believe the best viewership comparison is borough against trace of, coastAnd ResidenceThree other shows that were tragically canceled over the years. They’re all big budget shows, and borough Clocks under them all.
Another thread we think is noteworthy coast Creator Kevin Williamson said this about his show’s cancellation earlier this year, especially when it comes to the age of the audience:
I learned a lot about ‘perfection’. They can track down exactly who watched the show, how many minutes, how many episodes. This is an interesting way that they can measure the success of the show.
What happened was that the average age was 52 years. coast. People aged 50 and 60 are not as irritable as young people. Therefore it takes more time to complete the metrics. My contract says you have to make a decision within this amount of time. Ultimately it met the completion rate, just not in the time they allow for it. I don’t know if this is the reason or not.
We mention this because Nielsen’s top 10 stats this week specifically noted, “About 57% of views came from the 50+ demographic,” suggesting that the show may be suffering from the same underlying problems.
Given the ending, in our opinion, Netflix should have labeled it a limited series from the beginning. The story told in Season 1 has a beginning, middle, and end, and while there’s no doubt some small questions left unanswered and the glitch mirror set more, I’m personally not as bothered by it as I was with some previous shows. 1899Which I still really need future installments to recommend.
