Netflix has a notorious problem with timing between seasons of its biggest shows. Be it Stranger Things, The Witcher, or Wednesday, fans are regularly forced to wait two to three years for a new batch of episodes. bridgerton Suffers from exactly the same streaming-era bloat. Season 3 aired in summer 2024, and season 4 did not conclude until late February 2026 – a gap of almost two years.
Season 5 shouldn’t take that long!
As already announced, bridgerton Season 5 is already in active production in the United Kingdom. Netflix has clearly benefited from renewing the hit series ahead of schedule for Seasons 5 and 6, allowing showrunner Jess Brownell and the Shondaland team to keep the train going without waiting for 28-day viewer metrics to justify a greenlight.
Here are the details of the updated production schedule and the math on when Season 5 will actually release:

- Filming: Production officially begins in early spring 2026 (Netflix confirmed on March 24 but rumors flew a week or two before that) and shooting is scheduled to begin in early 2026, we can report.
- post production: Whereas bridgerton Is not needed Due to the level of heavy CGI seen in Stranger Things, it required extensive editing, ADR, and the recording of its orchestral pop cover. For a show of this size, post-production usually takes about 6 to 8 months.
- Release Date Estimate: If filming is completed by September or October 2026, 6-8 months of post-production takes us to spring or summer of 2027.
Some previous behind-the-scenes reporting speculated that we might not see the show return until late 2027 or early 2028. But given this extremely accelerated filming schedule – where the cast and crew were basically back on set immediately with the Season 4 finale – a release date in mid-2027 is a pretty safe bet. This means we’re looking at about a 14 to 16 month gap between seasons, which is a huge improvement compared to the tortuous wait for Season 4.
Of course, as always with productions, things fluctuate and can change dramatically.
filming bridgerton season 5 codename
bridgerton Season 5 filming is codenamed “New Cross,” we can confirm. This could be interpreted in a few ways as a nod to Francesca and Michaela’s romance, as well as another fan-favorite character.
Codenames have been very clever in the past:
- Season 2 (Anthony and Kate) was “Waterloo” – Representing a powerful, control-obsessed man who finally meets his partner and surrenders to the force he cannot defeat (love).
- Season 3 (Colin and Penelope) was “Hampstead” – Historically one of the most literary areas of England, serving as a nod to writers, observants and Lady Whistledown.
- Season 4 (Benedict and Sophie) was “Vauxhall” – Famous for its 18th and 19th century masquerade balls, where social rules were loosened and identities blurred.
on some Reddit has theorized Geographically, London’s New Cross station is the next railway stop after St John’s, perfectly mirroring Francesca’s emotional journey from her late husband, John Stirling, to her new chapter with Michaela. Thematically, the name represents the literal crossroads that Francesca faces as she is torn between her practical intentions to remarry and her unpredictable, passionate desires. Additionally, the district’s modern reputation as a vibrant center of music and LGBTQ+ culture meshes perfectly with Francesca’s identity as a pianist and the series’ first central Sapphic love story.
Latest Filming Snaps and Speculations
Francesca and Michaela are officially back in center stage as our new heads, this time with Hannah Dodd and Masali Baduza at the helm. A large cast is also expected to return, including Jonathan Bailey, Simon Ashley, Nicola Coughlan, Luke Newton and Golda Roshuwell, with Julie Andrews once again voicing Lady Whistledown.
Of course, we also just recently got some of the first glimpses behind the scenes. The photos, which we exclusively posted on Thursday, sent fans crazy on social media, trying to identify some of the new faces and confirm Eloise’s return.
Given that the series is filmed behind closed doors at Shepperton Studios, it is rare to obtain behind-the-scenes photos of the cast (other than officially released photos). However, UnboxPhD returned on Friday to capture even more additional photos while filming a ball scene in central London. In the footage, you can see that Netflix is going to great lengths to maintain privacy, forcing the cast and extras to wear heavy black cloaks outside Goldsmiths Hall to hide their spectacular costumes from the paparazzi.
Ahead, bridgerton Superfan Cassandra Moran (@cassmorann) recently caught a glimpse of Season 5 filming at a gorgeous, new location in London. He saw several extras in beautiful evening dresses, along with actresses Emma Naomi (Alice Mondrich) and Hugh Sachs (Brimsley), leading him to guess that the production was filming the Queen’s Ball. Although Moran did not personally see other key figures such as Francesca or Michaela, he acknowledged reports that Claudia Jessie was also seen on the set.
