The Pogues are coming back to Netflix for the last time. season 5 outer Banks Production begins in June 2025 and Officially wrapped up in December 2025. In case you missed it, Netflix renewed the series for its final season on November 4, 2024, just days after Pogolandia and before the release of Season 4, Part 2. The renewal came with a note that confirmed that the team behind the show had always dreamed of reaching five seasons to tell the Pogues’ complete story and that they were granted that wish.
Co-showrunners Shannon Burke, Josh Pate, and Jonas Pate wrote, “With a little sadness, but with excitement, we are leaving Season 4 behind, and turning to Season 5, in which we look forward to bringing our beloved Pogues home just as we envisioned and planned years ago. Season 5 will be our last season, and we think it will be our best yet. We hope you’ll tune in for another one for Surf Break.” Join us for a paddle.”

Since Season 4 was divided into two parts, it’s a little more challenging to compare its performance to previous seasons and other shows. What we do know is that the show spent 10 weeks in the overall weekly global top 10, with 292.80 million hours watched, which equates to approximately 49.60 million views. However, according to our estimates, Season 4 has decreased its viewership by 15% over the course of the season.
Season 4 charted in the weekly top 10 in 75 countries, slightly less than the 77 included in season 3.

As a quick recap of the big feature-length finale of Season 4 (Read a detailed recap here), and how it sets up Season 5, the episode takes the Pogues to Essaouira, Morocco, where they navigate a bustling, unfamiliar terrain in search of the famous Blue Crown. Of course, things didn’t go completely according to plan.
Heartbroken by JJ’s brutal murder, Key swears revenge on Groff. Rafe’s betrayal, Groff’s cruel nature, and the desperate search for treasure intertwine, leading to JJ’s courageous but tragic death. As he retrieves the Blue Crown amid a raging sandstorm, he sacrifices himself to save Ki, but is brutally stabbed by Groff. His final words, reaffirming his love for Key, seal a heartbreaking moment, leaving the Pogues shattered and forced to face a future without her.
In Season 5, the Pogues will hunt down Groff, who has fled to Lisbon with the Blue Crown. Of course, amidst the chaos, Sarah and John B’s revelation of their pregnancy adds emotional weight to the end and will bring an added dynamic to Season 5.
Co-showrunners have long known exactly how the series will end. “We knew from the beginning what the last scene would be, if we were lucky enough to make it that far,” he told Netflix.
We can’t discuss what to expect from Season 5 without mentioning that JJ Maybank was controversially killed off in the final episode. This sparked outrage with hopes of reinstating the character in some form in Season 5 (more on fan campaigns in a moment).

We have a big jump into all five, but like last season, everything happens in such a short amount of time; it seems like it would be this big, months-long adventure, but it actually doesn’t take that long. According to the official Netflix cast slate, all the key core members are set to return, including Chase Stokes as John B, Madeline Cline as Sarah Cameron, Madison Bailey as Kiara, Jonathan Davis as Pope, Carlesia Grant as Cleo, Austin North as Topher, Drew Starkey as Rafe Cameron, and Fiona Palomo as Sofia.

Judging by the fan reaction, it’s worth noting that fans have rallied to campaign for JJ’s return for the final season. Like all campaigns, their effectiveness may ultimately be negligible to the final product.

After initial delays the start of shooting has been pushed back, with filming officially underway for the final season. Starts on June 16, 2025. Production ran through the end of the year, eventually ending just before the holidays. 19 December 2025.
As with all previous seasons, most of the filming took place in Charleston, South Carolina. However, after season 4’s trip to Morocco, season 5 once again went international. From October to early December 2025, the cast and crew relocated to Croatia to shoot stand-in scenes in Lisbon, Portugal.
The Croatian shoot took place across a number of scenic locations including Dubrovnik, Cavtat, Danse Beach and Lokrum Island. The production used the historic architecture of Dubrovnik’s UNESCO-protected Old Town and Stradun for street-level chase scenes, while the Lapad Marina and Old Port were used for boat-based scenes.
Unfortunately, the international shoot was not without off-screen drama. In late October, reports emerged via TMZ of a fight on set in Croatia, alleging that co-creator Jonas Pate grabbed a production assistant and shook her. Stars Chase Stokes and Madeline Cline reportedly had to defuse the confrontation before filming could resume.
Following the European wrap, the cast returned to South Carolina for their final days of filming to conclude the series.
