With the first batch of episodes officially hitting our screens last week, what’s on Netflix can confirm that the animated spinoff, after several rumors over the past few months, Stranger Things: Stories from ’85was quietly renewed for a second season even before its premiere and is currently eyeing a return in late 2026.
It was announced in 2023 and gained momentum following the conclusion of the major series, Stories of ’85 is the first major expansion of stranger things The universe itself is on Netflix (video games and comic books exist, but on screens, at least). While fans are now busy binging Season 1 as it releases on April 23, 2026, it’s clear that Netflix has made a big bet on “Party” in its new animated form.
News of the imminent renewal shouldn’t come as a big surprise to those who have been following Netflix’s recent animation strategy or our reporting Stories of ’85 So far.

We first learned about the second season a few years ago, when the show was going into production in late 2023, and we found records that had listings for Year 1 and Year 2 of Project Mirkwood (the working title/codename of the series). Of course, many of the biggest Stranger Things fan accounts have been covering up the fact that season 2 is here for quite some time. Much of this stems from a leak late last year that teased Stories of ’85 Twice in the same year, except for the series’ 10th anniversary celebration in Q3.

<>Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 made a solid global impact upon its release on April 23, reaching Netflix’s top 10 chart on April 25 with an average global ranking of 6.1 and 393 total points. While it only managed to achieve the #1 spot in Sri Lanka, the animated spin-off found its strongest initial audiences in Eastern Europe and Southern Asia, successfully cracking the top 3 in countries such as the Czech Republic, India, Poland and Slovakia.
However, the series performed more moderately in major English-speaking markets, reaching #6 in the United States and #5 in the United Kingdom, without breaking the highest levels. what to expect from Stranger Things: Stories from ’85 season 2

Now that the show has started, we already have the first major clue as to what will happen in Season 2.
The season 1 finale, “The Countdown”, ends with the gang—along with new members Nikki and Mrs. Baxter—successfully stopping the Horde Queen from opening a new gate to the Upside Down. Eleven manages to seal the gate by crushing the Queen’s super-sized body between dimensions, effectively killing the monster and neutralizing the green-goo-fueled threat of Daniel Fisher.
While the party returns to a new D&D campaign with Hopper’s extended curfew blessing, a haunting post-battle scene reveals that the danger is far from over. In the Upside Down, a stem sprouts from the lifeless corpse of the Horde Queen, blossoming into a glowing flower with blue petals and the terrifying, unkillable claws of a Demogorgon.
Showrunner Eric Robles has already confirmed that this sinister flora is exactly where the next batch of episodes are going, telling Netflix:
“The Demogorgon-mouthed flower that we are seeing represents the beginning of what will become a new mystery and chapter Stranger Things: Stories from ’85 Saga.”
With Nikki and the Baxters officially deciding to stay in Hawkins and a new Upside Down mutation taking root, the stage is set for the party’s return in late 2026.
