While producers Michael Green and Amber Noizumi initially said in interviews that they were targeting a 2026 release, we exclusively reported Season 2 isn’t coming to Netflix until 2027.
Given the sheer scale and potential of this animation, this isn’t entirely surprising. The renewal order in December 2023 was unlike the standard upfront animated renewal, and Netflix did not officially confirm until much later that production was fully underway. Good animation takes time – and as the creators have said before, they’ve planned a grand 3-season arc for the series, meaning they’re playing the long game here.
How many episodes will there be in season 2?
Season 2 will be a slightly tougher affair. We learned that the second season will include 6 episodes (down from 8 in the first season), each installment runs approximately 44 minutes.
Who is in the cast for season 2?
The stellar cast that brought Edo-period Japan to life are returning in a big way. Expect to hear the sounds of:

- Darren Barnett as taigen
- Aunty Oka as ringo

New Cast Additions:

- freddie fox (slow horses, dragon house) will play a new character named “Poet”.
- eve ridley (Magician) has also signed on to voice a character named “Sarah”.
Given the uniquely British names, it’s a safe bet that we’ll meet both of these characters across the pond! (There have been persistent rumors floating around the internet that Jason Isaacs may lend his voice to the show, but we’ll have to wait for official confirmation on this front).

What to expect from the story of Season 2?
“No one hesitates in taking revenge. And I will have it.”
The biggest change in Season 2 is the change in scenery. Mizzou is heading to uncharted territory: London. She is dragging the captured Abijah Fowler along as a “living map” to locate the two remaining white men who could be her father: Skeffington and Routley. The creators promised that Mizuho’s religion is still revenge, even if she has to burn down London to get it.
Meanwhile, the situation in Japan is equally tense. The plot will follow Akemi and Taigen as they navigate the treacherous political chess game of Edo Castle under a dangerous new shogun, while the lovable Ringo searches for a new purpose.
During a major tease at the Annecy Animation Film Festival, Dylan Thomas (Director of Adult Animation at Netflix) revealed that the new storyboards are “weirder, bigger, and even more heartbreaking than those for the first season”. Even more juicy, Amber Noizumi dropped a big hint with a smile: “There probably are people you thought were dead… who are probably still alive.” Could it be Seki? Heiji Shindo? only time will tell.
