Alan Bennett and Nicholas Hytner’s heartwarming wartime drama The Coral is officially heading to Netflix for its streaming video-on-demand (SVOD) debut.

If you missed seeing this comforting, deeply touching British drama during its theatrical run late last year, it’s time to add it to your watchlist. That’s thanks to Netflix’s ongoing first pay window output deal with Sony Pictures (which also includes the Sony Pictures Classics library). Coral is officially making its SVOD premiere on Netflix in the US later this summer Currently scheduled for July 2, 2026.

It took a while to get to Netflix. While most Sony Pictures movies take between 90 to 120 days for streaming, this one took significantly longer, which isn’t entirely unusual with SPC movies.

Here’s everything you need to know about the movie before you hit the platform.

What is The Coral about?

Based on the fictional Yorkshire town of Ramsden in 1916, Coral Contrasts the lightness and joy of small village life with the devastating realities of the First World War. The local choral society is bleeding its male members into the war effort on the Western Front, with the ambitious town committee refusing to cancel its annual display. Instead, they do the unthinkable: they break the rules and recruit local teenage boys to swell their ranks. To whip them into shape, they hire the controversial, uncompromising Dr. Henry Guthrie, an atheist who has recently returned from a career in Germany.

As recruitment letters come out for young boys, the choir becomes a deeply haunted place. The town soon discovers that making music together may be the best answer to the chaos that is ruining their lives.

The film marks the first original big-screen screenplay from the anthology in decades 91 year old playwright alan bennett. It reunites him with his frequent directorial collaborators nicholas hytnerwho previously worked with Bennett on acclaimed adaptations The Madness of King George, The History Boys, And woman in van.

Box office and reviews: Is it worth watching?

In short: yes, especially if you like a classic, Sunday-afternoon British casual watch.

The film originally premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September 2025, before being released in theaters for the holidays. In an era where adult-oriented indie dramas may struggle to find a foothold in theaters, Coral It managed to gross a very respectable $10 million at the global box office.

Critics have greatly appreciated the film’s blend of wit and poignancy. Reviewer Peter Travers gave 3 out of 4 stars for the filmpraising it as an “old-fashioned crowd pleaser” and saying it “revels in its own qualities of old-fashioned storytelling”. other reviewers praised Bennett’s sharp, slightly dirty humor, highlighting the film’s depiction of “the healing power of music”.
