It is incredibly intriguing and layered, reflecting one of the most notorious framing plots in American legal history. In this post, we outline the timeline of the case along with facts that were missing from the Netflix documentary, and we take a look at where the key individuals involved are today.
Case: A Complete Overview
Key facts not included in the documentary are gathered from the official trial document, which you can see here.
Ian Diaz and his relationship with Michelle Headley
Ian Diaz was first hired by the US Marshals Service in 2010 as a criminal investigator. Before becoming a US Marshal, he worked at Disneyland. In 2013, he began dating Michelle Headley after meeting on a dating app; They were immediately smitten and with frequent visits to his former workplace at Disney, their relationship soon blossomed into something. According to Hadley, he pressured her to take a $20,000 pay cut to leave her job for a marketing position at Disney, which, looking back, she believes was a coercive technique to ensure that her former coworkers kept an eye on her. The lawsuit states that he would often “have people at Disney ‘check’ his work performance.” It also mentions that some of his Disney colleagues were aware of his behavior.
Hadley also noted that early in their relationship, he dictated her style, which included crop tops, navel piercings, and long acrylic nails. He also took a tough stance on how much alcohol she drank and how much she slept. Infiltrator behavior also included espionage. The official lawsuit document noted: “Whenever she drove outside the narrow triangle of home, school, and work, Ian Diaz would immediately call her, as if he was tracking her vehicle.”
Despite initial suspicious behaviour, Michelle Hadley remains in a relationship with Ian and is determined to make it work. She accepted his marriage proposal in December 2014.
A few years later, in June 2015, they bought a condo together in Anaheim, California. It is noted that Ian Diaz was excited about the property because it was located near Disneyland. Michelle Hadley alone paid a down payment of $14,401.20 and the two obtained a mortgage in the amount of $459,745.00.
After they moved in together, Ian’s controlling and abusive behavior towards Michelle became more severe. He would soon involve her in his sexual fantasies and demand that she have sex with strangers while he watched. This constant pressure caused severe emotional distress, later diagnosed as PTSD. One Valentine’s Day, she succumbed to the pressure and had sex with a man she believed Diaz had gotten from Craigslist.
In August 2015, just a few months after purchasing the condo, Michelle Hadley packed up her car and drove away. Diaz destroyed her personal property, as well as canceled her car insurance without telling her. Eventually, Michelle Hadley left her job at Disney and moved into an apartment near Chapman University. She took steps to break off her relationship with Ian Diaz. However, he remained in Anaheim. The condo became a major point of contention between them. The two exchanged heated emails in the condo. Ian Diaz made no effort to mortgage the condo.

Ian Diaz, Angela Diaz, and the ‘rape fantasy’ conspiracy
After the breakup with Michelle Hadley, Ian Diaz quickly moved on to another relationship. He married Angela Connell in early 2016, about a month after they met. She moved into an Anaheim condo with him.
Michelle found out about their relationship only a few months later, when she saw his name on the documents related to the condo. After living alone in a small apartment, she moved in with her parents in Ontario. She gave up her career and education, sold many of her possessions, and worked toward a new start, believing that Ian Diaz posed a significant threat to her safety.
In a bizarre move, Michelle later realized in the summer of 2016 that Angela had taken out a restraining order on Michelle. At that time, the two women had never met each other.
‘Rape Fantasy’ Framing
In June 2016, Ian and Angela created Craigslist accounts under Michelle Hadley’s name, as well as other personas that were associated with her name, most notably Lilith. They posted ads under Craigslist casual encounter section, asking for ‘rape fantasy’ in which men would come to her home and violently attack her. After receiving responses, he gave Kondo’s address and told them to ignore her if she screamed, cried, or fought back. The basis of the framing was for Ian and Angela to claim that Michelle was trying to rape Angela.
Angela willingly and actively participates in a plot to frame Ian’s former fiancée Michelle. She faked both the pregnancy and the cancer as part of an orchestrated plot to portray herself as a vulnerable victim and make Michelle appear malicious. The framing resulted in a deliberate ‘rape fantasy’ plot. When the men arrived at the home, Angela called 911 multiple times, claiming that Michelle was sending threats, showing the police a Craigslist response she and Ian had fabricated.
The Anaheim Police Department eventually arrested Mitchell. They believed he was deliberately targeting Angela, a pregnant and cancer-stricken woman.
Angela and Ian had, at first, successfully tricked the police into arresting Michelle. He was charged with felony stalking, attempted forcible rape, violation of a restraining order and assault. As a result he lost his job, his reputation and his family business also suffered losses. Headley spent 88 days in jail before being acquitted.
When the police re-investigated the case, they found strong evidence that Ian and Angela were the real culprits. The evidence was overwhelming, the originator’s IP address and temporary files on Ian’s computer proved that the emails were being sent under the name lilith. Angela Diaz was sentenced to 5 years in state prison in October 2017. Ian Diaz was convicted in March 2023 and sentenced in June 2023 to more than 84 months (7 years) in federal prison.
