Hard to believe, but it’s officially been a decade since we first grabbed our walkie-talkies, hopped on our BMX bikes, and rode into Hawkins, Indiana. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of stranger thingsNetflix has a big surprise for fans: a new “VHS Special Edition” of the iconic first season.
If you’re looking for the ultimate excuse to revisit the franchise before it ends, this might be it. Here’s everything you need to know about the new release, plus some other exciting stuff stranger things We’ve spotted a few additions to the platform.
What is Stranger Things: VHS Special Edition?
Taking the show’s 1980s nostalgia to the extreme, Netflix has not only re-uploaded the original 2016 episodes. Instead, they’ve given the entire 8-episode first season a complete retro visual and audio overhaul.
According to the official synopsis on the Netflix platform, this new version invites fans to:
“Rewind and relive the first season with a video store vibe that’s messy, grainy, and fabulously vintage – just like you rented it in 1983.”
Instead of crystal-clear 4K HDR, expect tracking lines, slight color bleeding, CRT monitor distortion, and that warm, fuzzy audio crackle you’d get from a well-worn tape rented straight from the family video. It’s the same “Chapter One: The Vanishing of Will Byers” that captivated us ten years ago, but presented exactly as it would have looked had you seen it in Mike Wheeler’s basement.

VHS version of Stranger Things
Netflix kicked off the 10th anniversary of Season 1 this morning with a special new poster featuring art from all five seasons, and we’re expecting a few more goodies throughout the day along with rumored announcements, including a release date. Stranger Things: Stories from ’85 And some news regarding taping first shadow. Don’t expect any big spin-off news, however, as we hear it’s still a bit early.
The show also received 7 Emmy nominations, especially for its final season.
