Who is returning for season 4?
There has been a major reshuffle in the call sheet! Now that we’re deep into the Grace Penn administration, Netflix has officially promoted three stars to series regulars:
- alison janney as President Grace Penn
- bradley whitford Todd Penn as first husband
- Nana Mensah as White House Chief of Staff Billy Appiah
As Deadline recently reported, Mensah’s Billy Appiah has been with the show since Season 1, but he’s become more central moving forward. After secretly back-channeling Grace Penn to remove her from the VP position in Season 3, Billy now has to figure out how to ingratiate himself with the newly minted POTUS.
Meanwhile, Jenny and Whitford’s promotion serves as their continuing television reunion. Both actors famously worked together Diplomat Series creator Deborah Kahn on NBC’s Emmy-laden political drama West Wing.
Showrunner Deborah Kahn told Netflix’s Tudum, “Working with Allison and Brad, seeing them together again, and the off-the-chart foursome that we have with Kerry and Rufus… it’s a crazy bag of candy. Our expectations were very high, and it absolutely exceeded them.”

Photos show Kate Wyler and First Gentleman Todd Penn exiting a vehicle with security officers close by as they head to Turnbull & Asser, the historic, Royal Warrant-holding bespoke shirt maker best known for dressing King Charles III. The production clearly went all out for this high-profile scene, with over a hundred extras cast to play the barricaded fans, police officers and swarms of paparazzi, prompting a highly publicized and heavily guarded public outing for the pair.

As reported Florence Daily NewsThe production filmed scenes in Tuscany between May and June 2026. Before additional production moved to Florence, the historic center of Lucca was transformed into an open-air film set, with cameras set up in iconic locations such as Piazza Napoleone, Porta San Pietro and Piazza San Frediano.

We also now have official episode-by-episode writing credits, showcasing the powerhouse creative team bringing this season’s complex geopolitical story to life. Creator and showrunner Deborah Kahn returned to write the teleplay for the season premiere (from a story co-written by co-creator Anna Adele Hagen), as well as writing episodes 2 and 8. The remaining scripts for the season are divided between the show’s returning senior staff: co-executive producer Jessica Brickman wrote episode 3, executive producer Peter R. Noah wrote episode 4, executive produced by Eli G. Etty wrote episode 5, executive story editor Julianna Dudley Meagher wrote episode 6, and Anna Adele Hagen handled episode 7.
What to Expect from Season 4 of? Diplomat
WARNING: The following section contains spoilers. proceed with caution!
Season 3 was described by creator Deborah Kahn as a “split”, depicting the emotional collapse of Kate and Hal’s marriage. But just when Kate and Hal end the season by reconciling – with Kate begging for a second chance and giving up her romance with Callum – a geopolitical bombshell quickly derails their happy ending.
The biggest thread that needs to be dealt with in Season 4 is the Poseidon Missile. As we learned in the explosive Season 3 finale, the US and UK had to use a convincing “Runit Dome” scenario to contain an endangered Russian B-90 Sarov nuclear submarine. Instead, Hal and President Grace Penn secretly plot the theft of the sub’s “doomsday weapon”.
When Kate pieces together that they not only photographed the sub with a drone, but actually deployed a giant Ohio-scale sub to steal the Poseidon, Hal tells her not to “tell anyone.”
This leaves Kate in an impossible position. She’s watching her husband and the President of the United States go completely evil. Creator Deborah Kahn teased the terrifying new dynamic, telling Netflix:
“[Fans] Should be worried. There is a lot to worry about. “It can be very scary when you look at who takes power and realize that they are abusing it terribly.”
What’s worse for Kate is that the betrayal isn’t romantic – it’s intellectual. First husband Todd Penn pointed to Hal and Grace’s “extremely productive working relationship,” and Kahn confirmed that seeing her husband change the world with another woman is a huge blow to Kate. “This is a very, very, very big betrayal,” the author said. “When two people are pressing the gas at the same time and no one has their foot on the brake – it’s scary.”
If Prime Minister Trowbridge or the Russians found out that America stole the Poseidon weapon, it could start World War III. Keri Russell promises that the impending “ups and downs will be fun,” while Sewell teases that whether Kate and Hal are at war or together, fans are in for a wild ride.

when will it happen Diplomat Will season 4 be on Netflix?
Netflix has officially scheduled the season 4 premiere for sometime in late July 2026, as of our last update 2026.
The series is currently deep in post-production, with filming scheduled to complete on June 5, 2026. Given the standard turnaround time for a Netflix drama of this scale, we’re predicting heavy Q4 2026 release date-Will probably arrive in time for binge watching in November or December.
