It’s been more than three months since Kitty Song Covey packed her bags for her latest adventure XO, Kitty Season 3, and we are still waiting for an official statement on her future. While last season was renewed at lightning speed, a new report suggests the future for all the boys The spin-off is currently being debated heavily behind the scenes.
If you’re a fan of YA rom-coms, you might be a little nervous (in addition to being very disappointed – we see you!). Typically, when a Netflix Original doesn’t get greenlit within the first 28 to 60 days, it’s not a good sign. XO, Kitty Famously secured its Season 2 and Season 3 renewals less than a month after their respective premieres.
However, don’t panic just yet. as covered on Nelly Andreeva deadline last weekendThe series has not been quietly cancelled; It’s just stuck in creative limbo.
According to Deadline, Paramount Television Studios (which absorbed Awesomeness and produces the show) has officially extended Netflix’s option on the series. Importantly, the studio also increased options for the cast, meaning Anna Cathcart (Kitty), Song Heon Lee (Min Ho), and the rest of the cast are still locked in and available if Netflix orders more.
Then why the delay? It seems that the ongoing conversation between Netflix and the creators is not about whether or not to end Kitty’s story, but how.
A fourth season vs. a wrap-up movie
Deadline notes that executives are currently considering a few different options for the franchise. The first is the traditional Season 4, which could see Kitty returning to Seoul or moving to an entirely new setting. Another option is to end the series with a standalone feature-length film to complete the story.
If producer Jenny Han does select a film, the outlet noted that it would line up perfectly with her past track record. It seems Han likes the “rule of three.” Original To all the boys I’ve loved before The saga was neatly packaged as a film trilogy and its hit Prime Video series I became beautiful in summer Currently a similar strategy is being adopted by ending its story with a movie follow-up after three seasons.
Creatively, Season 3 left things in a place that could have served as a natural jumping-off point for the finale. It ends with Kitty and ex-enemy turned love-interest Min Ho reconciling and going back to America so she can meet her father.
