Will Ferrell’s new comedy series, falconhas officially taken off on Netflix, and according to Netflix, is “off to a strong start”, becoming the third most watched English series title with 4.8 million views out of 24.7 million viewing hours in the week of July 13 to July 19. How does that stack up? What does this mean for Season 2? let’s take a look.
Before we get into the data, if you’re still on the fence about diving in, be sure to check out our full review, which leans more on the positive side than most critics. It currently sits at a rotten score of 29% on Rotten Tomatoes. Viewers have fared better with 65% on RT, and on IMDb, the series currently sits at a 6.3. For those who have already made their way through the early races, we also revealed how the final stage sets the stage for a potential Season 2.
When evaluating the show’s renewal prospects, Netflix executives will look closely at its global audience performance versus its underlying economics. On the financial front, the series presents a highly favorable equation for the streamer: It has an estimated production budget of $5 to $7 million per episode, which is a lot for a straight comedy like this, but was approved for a massive $17.1 million tax credit from the state of California. Now that the first week of data is here, let’s look at the numbers and see exactly how falcon How it stacks up against the competition and where in the world it’s (and isn’t) landing.
Our decision? For a pure comedy, this is a very strong start, though naturally it falls short of some other titles in recent years, which mixed comedy with something else. whether it be gentlemenWhich blends comedy with action and drama, phubarOr trace ofWhich also had its fair share of action in the mix. The most comparable titles are an inside man And no one wants thisBut I wouldn’t consider them straight comedy either. More appropriate comparisons are preferred Unstable, lien, Decameronor choice of tire, bad thoughts (which debuted with 3.8 million views on Tuesday), or free burt.
So let’s stack them all up – where falcon Place?
Is it good enough for Season 2? Perhaps. We’ve seen time and time again over the years that the hurdle for a Season 2 renewal for a comedy is significantly lower than a drama, but the budget is the only thing that concerns us, provided it’s accurate.
FlixPatrol numbers show where Hawks is performing (and where not)
The problem with pure comedies is that whether they originate in America or another region, comedies often struggle to break out of their home region. We see this again and again, given that humor is a very cultural thing, and while American comedy is arguably more exportable than others, you’ll still find that it plays into some areas better than others, and that’s going on with The Hawk.
looking at the Latest Flixpatrol dataThe series became an instant hit on July 17 and immediately took the coveted #1 spot in major English-speaking territories, including the US, Canada, Australia and Ireland. Although today it has slipped slightly to #2 in the United States, its momentum has not slowed elsewhere – it remains strong at #2 in the UK and has snatched the #1 crown in New Zealand.
Outside of those core English-language markets, the show is performing exceptionally well in Northern Europe and the Nordics. Subscribers in Iceland, Finland, and Sweden all pushed the series to #1, while Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, and Norway remained steady at #2. It’s a classic trajectory for a highly binge-worthy release, gaining momentum daily and steadily climbing the ranks over the weekend in countries like Switzerland, Austria, and Trinidad and Tobago (all peaking at #3 today).
However, falcon Southern Europe is struggling to grow at the same pace as Eastern Europe and the Middle East. It is currently finishing near the bottom of the top 10 in markets such as Italy (#9), Portugal (#9), Bahrain (#10), and the United Arab Emirates (#9). Furthermore, its complete absence from the charts in huge Netflix regions like Latin America and Asia suggests that the series has yet to find its global crossover appeal. We’ll be keeping a close eye on the official top 10 numbers this Tuesday to see if it can spread its wings wider, but for now, it’s definitely a Western, English-inspired hit. More precisely, it has no shows in all of Asia and Latin America.
