In a recent behind-the-scenes Q&A on Instagram, showrunner Sarah Lampert answered several fan questions, dropped major details about where Season 4 is in post-production, gave a brief update on Season 5, and revealed some of the show’s best-kept filming secrets.

Season 4: Prepare for an emotional rollercoaster
If you’re wondering how far ahead Season 4 is, we have good news: Post-production work is in full swing.
When a fan asked what would be the most emotional episode of Season 4, the creator gave a definitive list: Episodes 6, 7, 9, and 10.
We already know that the finale is going to be a blast. When asked what the most exciting part of post-production was, the showrunner admitted it was seeing the director’s cuts. Recently, he watched the cut of episode 10 and burst into tears within the first five minutes — not necessarily because of any tragic plot, but because of extreme pride in what the cast and crew accomplished this season.
Fans also asked about the editing process and how the team decides what to cut for time. The creator admitted that it was a difficult trial and error process with the producers and Netflix executives, noting that Episode 9 was particularly painful to shorten. However, he confirmed that they eventually got it in time and teased it as a “phenomenal” episode.
One of the highlights of episode 9 will be a glimpse straight into Maxine’s mind. When asked if there was any scene that was difficult but rewarding to bring to life, the showrunner pointed to Max’s opening internal monologue in episode 9. Based on his own personal experiences with ADD and OCD, the producer praised actress Sarah Weisglass, who perfectly executed this bizarre, hilarious, and energetic sequence.

Season 5 Status: No word yet…
While Season 4 is nearing the finish line, what about Season 5? When discussing the emotional weight of ending the fourth season, it was quickly noted: “We don’t know about season five yet… we don’t know.”
At the moment, Netflix has not officially greenlit a fifth season, which means Season 4’s viewership will be significant, although the show has consistently performed well, so we’re not particularly worried.

The quiz also provided great answers to fans’ questions about the daily reality of making the show:
- Real House vs Set – A fan asked if the show is filmed in real homes or on sets, and the answer is both! The exteriors of the Miller and Baker houses are real houses located across the street from each other (although a fake trellis was added to the Baker house so that Marcus could climb over it). However, the interiors of those houses are 100% soundstage sets. Meanwhile, Cynthia’s house is completely practical, filmed on location inside and out.
- Block Shooting Chaos – Were multiple episodes filmed in a single day? Yes! The production utilizes “block shooting” and “tandem days”, meaning that four different episodes can run on the same day. To survive this grueling schedule, the hair, makeup, and wardrobe teams had to make strategic decisions, such as keeping hairstyles simple so they could work seamlessly into the many out-of-order scenes.
- “Cursed” reused props – When asked if outfits and props were reused, the producer revealed a ridiculous ongoing failure. In the pilot, Max gives Ginny a jean jacket. Every season, the showrunners intend to put Ginny back in the jacket to symbolize their strong friendship, and every season, they completely forget to write it into the script until it’s too late.
- The pain of filming text messages – A fan asked about the process of adding pop-ups and text to the screen and as we’ve heard elsewhere, it’s particularly difficult. Capturing a simple shot of a character texting requires 20 minutes of laborious setup and hand-doubles. The actual phone screen is practically never captured; Text messages must be written in advance and approved by writers, and actors use pre-programmed apps where pressing a button makes the text appear (or it is added later via green screen).
When asked how long post-production takes and how many people are involved, the showrunner explained that it’s a huge remote undertaking that actually starts while the show is still being filmed. It involves a small army of picture editors, sound mixers, composers, music supervisors and VFX artists.
A big part of that process is music. One fan asked if they were allowed to sing before or after filming. Because songs are expensive and require strict approval, the team usually films using a “thump track” (a basic beat for the actors) so that they are not tied to a specific song. However, sometimes they know what they want ahead of time -Fun Fact: The scene in Season 2 where Ginny gives Paul the blue smoothie was originally based on Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy”! Today, the indie-heavy soundtrack is drawn from a massive 30-hour Spotify playlist created by the showrunners to support undiscovered artists.
Finally, to kick things off, a fan asked the industry a very timely question: Does AI play any role in post-production anymore?
The manufacturer’s answer was quick and definite: “No, not for us. No.”
